Reflection and Discussion Guide for Cracked Bat
Suggestions for Circles and Book Clubs:
1. Decide upon the question(s) to be discussed. Some groups have filled an entire evening with just one!
2. Sit in a circle and pass a small object like a stone or a shell around, allowing each participant a turn to speak to the question. Only the person with the object can talk during this time. After everyone has had a chance, pass the object again so each person can respond to what has been heard.
3. Move into a more free-flowing discussion.
Questions to Consider:
1. What does this novel make you wonder or question?
2. Have you found more compassion for your self or others through reading Linnea’s story?
How? Why? Why not?
3. Imagine meeting Rick Andersen. What would you say to him?
4. Did Linnea forgive her father or not? What makes you think so?
5. How do you feel about Shane’s actions in the tower?
6. Was Linnea a good wife? A good mother? A good person?
7. What “gold” did she gain?
8. In which way did each character get his or her own “happy” ending?
9. Which character in the novel do you most resonate with right now in your life? Why?
10. Do you have any experience with chronic pain, prescription drug interactions, or alarming or frustrating medical care? Does the idea of an energy cyst intrigue or alarm you? Why?
